Advertisements

     Are advertisements pornographic?

In my opinion, most of the advertisements shown in today's society use sex appeal to persuade the customer to buy or use their product, but to determine whether or not the ad is considered pornographic depends on what is being revealed on the person and also the gender of that person.  I also think a society's view of "normal" contributes to the opinion of whether ads are pornographic or not. For example, if a man were to have his shirt off in an ad selling cologne I do not think that is considered porn because it is normal for a man to be seen without a shirt on. Now if a woman was in an advertisement with her shirt off selling perfume, that would be considered porn because our society is not used to seeing women walk around without their shirt on. These circumstances could be different based on where you live, how you were raised, and many other factors.

  1. I agree with this to an extent. A man with his shirt off in an advertisement for cologne is not any more "normal" than a woman with her shirt off selling perfume. Go to any local beach and you will see that girls with their shirts off are just as abundant as guys with their shirt off. However, I do believe that you are correct in saying that "society's view of 'normal' contributes to the opinion of whether ads are pornographic or not." It is all very hard to determine what is pornography and what isn't as well; If someone goes into an art museum, he or she would see naked women and sexual innuendos everywhere, and that is considered creative and tasteful, not pornography. So where is the cut off? It's hard to say, but it is something to look into.

  2. I agree with you whitney. I think that a lot of advertisements should start to calm down with their sexual suggestions. They are promoting sex more than they are their product. They can get away with a few things, like you said a male with his shirt off, however only to a certain extent. Victoria's Secret sells bras and underwear, so they have to have their models show off their bras and undies. This isn't porn because they are revealing their product. Bras and undies are made to be sexy. It all depends on what they are selling. However, I do believe that advertisements must be regulated. Hypothetically speaking, if i had kids I wouldn't want them seeing what's on tv now.
